The Edge of Survival follows world champion kayakers and brothers, Matthias and Jakob Weger, as they embark on a daring first descent of New Zealand’s untamed Joe River. This 70 km white water torrent, nestled deep within a remote ‘no-fly zone’ and surrounded by treacherous glaciers, is one of the last true wildernesses on Earth. Just reaching the river’s source requires an extraordinary approach—an innovative combination of kayaking and parapente flying, a groundbreaking method designed by Matthias himself.
This revolutionary mission pushes the brothers into uncharted territory with no margin for error. The perilous eight-hour flight, using nothing but wind and thermals, leads them to the source of the Joe River. From there, they will face the most dangerous part of their journey—descending a completely unknown river. With no detailed maps and only satellite imagery to guide them, the brothers must navigate unpredictable rapids, steep rocky gorges, and hidden waterfalls, all while battling the physical and mental exhaustion of this extreme adventure.
More than just a high-stakes expedition, The Edge of Survival is an intimate exploration of brotherhood, obsession, and survival. Viewers are drawn into a breathtaking, emotional journey, one that challenges the limits of human endurance and redefines what is possible in extreme sports and exploration.
